THE ESSENTIAL ANDREAS VOLLENWEIDER provides an excellent service by skimming the cream from the Swiss harpist's numerous albums over a 20-year period. The collection showcases Vollenweider's modified electric harp, yet it also demonstrates his amazing stylistic range and sense of experimentation. The collection spans from his popular 1980s material, including the space music of albums like CAVERNA MAGICA and the moody, filmic music of his Grammy-winning DOWN TO THE MOON.
In the '90s, Vollenweider moved increasingly toward a pan-global sound, drawing on the indigenous music of Asian, African, Irish, Eastern European, and South and North American cultures. Yet Vollenweider's compositions remain distinctly his own, blending all of these elements into a sometimes-rhythmic, sometimes-cinematic, but always evocative and atmospheric style. THE ESSENTIAL works nicely as both an overview of Vollenweider's career and a fine introduction to the ambitious, multi-faceted music of this New Age pioneer.
