Hot Tuna: Jorma Kaukonen (guitar, vocals); Papa John Creach (violin); Will Scarlett (harmonica); Jack Cassady (bass); Sammy Piazza (drums).
Recorded live at the Chateau Liberte, Santa Cruz, California in April 1971. Includes liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin.
Personnel: Jorma Kaukonen (vocals, guitar); Papa John Creach (violin); Will Scarlett (harmonica); Jack Casady (bass guitar); Sammy Piazza (drums).
Recording information: Chateau Liberté, Deep in the Santa Cruz Mountains, CA.
Photographer: Jack Casady.
After kicking off their career acoustically with their 1969 self-titled debut, Hot Tuna returned two years later with their sophomore effort, FIRST PULL UP THEN PULL DOWN. This time out, Kaukonen and Casady put their acoustics down and plug in their electric guitars, and are joined again by harmonica blower Will Scarlet, as well as new contributors Papa John Kreach (violin) and Sammy Piazza (drums). Standouts include the definitive version of the Tuna classic "Come Back Baby," as well as "Candy Man" and "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning." What appeared to be a side project quite different in sound and approach to Jefferson Airplane (Kaukonen and Casady's then full time job), Hot Tuna pulls closer to the classic Airplane psychedelic rock sound with FIRST PULL UP THEN PULL DOWN.
