Being the main figurehead of the Grateful Dead was just one of Jerry Garcia's outlets for his insatiable love of music and performance. Apart from the hundreds of yearly Dead gigs, Garcia participated in countless less publicized jam sessions and often played out solo or with the Jerry Garcia Band. Garcialive, Vol. 1 is the first in a series of releases offering up previously unreleased concert recordings from Garcia's seemingly bottomless live archive. Recorded in 1980 at the Capitol Theater in Passic, New Jersey, the extensive set list includes only a few Garcia/Dead staples ("Deal," "Sugaree"), but branches out into more eclectic territory with massively jammed-out versions of covers ranging from the Beatles to Jimmy Cliff. Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter joins the band for an encore including "Tiger Rose" and "Promontory Rider."
