Solo performer: Charlemagne Palestine (Bosendorfer piano).
Recorded at Washington Square Church, New York, New York in January 1987.
Original 1970s minimalist Charlemagne Palestine used to play exhaustively long concerts when he first appeared on the Soho loft scene. He would often preface his signature piece, "Strumming Music," with a lush Debussy-like prelude of cascading figures over which he would chant in his keening boy soprano. Over the years, however, Palestine began to devote more and more time to his visual art, even such obsessive pursuits as skywriting! Produced in the '90s and excellently recorded by Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo, GODBEAR was a comeback of sorts, and contains abridged but still rich-sounding versions of "Strumming Music" and "The Lower Depths."
