This tape, one of three in the Great Generals of the Ancient World series, explores the life and career of the Carthaginian general Hannibal, considered to be one of the great military geniuses of all time. Born into the powerful Barca family, Hannibal became commander of Carthaginian forces in Spain in 221 B.C. During the Second Punic War, he surprised his Roman enemy by leading troops in an incredible 15-day forced march across the Alps with a full-baggage train and elephants. He defeated the Roman armies at Trebia and Cannae, but his armies were ultimately crushed by Scipio. The other two tapes in the series profile Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great.
