Heart of the Hills

Heart of the Hills was based on The Girl From the East, a short story by David Whitelaw. When his wife is murdered and his daughter kidnapped, Sir Christopher Madgwick (Bigelow Cooper decides that it is high time to leave India and return to London. Years later, Sir Christopher receives word that his daughter Hester (Mabel Trunnelle) is still alive, albeit reared as an East Indian. Hester's return to the Madgwick household is greeted with disdain by his two children from his second marriage, who regard the heroine as a "heathen." When Sir Christopher dies suddenly, Hester is accused of murder. She is finally exonerated and accepted in "proper" society upon recovering a valuable gem which had earlier been stolen from her father -- and, as frosting on the cake, she becomes the wife of nominal hero Redgell (Conway Tearle).
