Superchunk: Mac McCaughan (vocals, keyboards); Jim Wilbur (guitar, keyboards); Laura Ballance (bass); Jon Wurster (drums).
Additional personnel: John Neff (pedal steel guitar); Anna Balka (violin); Heather McIntosh (cello); Chris Lopez (background vocals).
Recorded at Zero Return Studios, Atlanta, Georgia.
HERE'S TO SHUTTING UP marks the eighth effort from Merge Records flagship band Superchunk. It is also one of the band's more streamlined offerings, coming in at just 10 tracks. With the aid of producer Brian Paulson, who also twiddled the knobs for FOOLISH, Superchunk's seminal 1994 record, guitarist Jim Wilbur, drummer Jon Wurster, bassist Laura Ballance, and guitarist Mac McCaughan explore more mellow and subdued territory by way of more ambitious instrumentation. Although HERE'S TO SHUTTING UP might lack the charmingly underproduced, overly caffieneated quality of Superchunk's earlier offerings, both casual fans and diehards will undoubtedly be seduced by the catchy melodies and mature songcraft.
