Country singer, legend, and icon George Jones was first discovered by record producer Pappy Daily, who signed him to his local Texas label Starday Records. This brief set collects the key early sides Jones recorded for the label (and for Mercury Records, which partnered with Starday on a distribution deal), including "Why Baby Why," "Don't Stop the Music," "White Lightning," "Tender Years," and "Achin', Breakin' Heart," which turned out to be Jones' last hit for the Starday/Mercury contract before he departed for United Artists Records (where Daily has taken a position as a staff producer) in 1962. ~ Steve Leggett
