In the '60s, The Creation just couldn't catch a break. Pete Townshend was such a fan that he tried to break the band up, asking co-leader Eddie Phillips to join the Who as second guitarist. The general public was considerably less enthralled. The band's onstage antics were too weird--while the classically-trained Phillips attacked his guitar with a violin bow, singer Kenny Pickett would create instant spray paintings on canvas and then set them on fire. Their songs were too aggressive--the Creation played loud, snotty pop songs with titles like "Biff Bang Pow" and "Painter Man," a story of a guy who abandons the pursuit of fine art for the world of commercial design. The group's demeanor was too obscure--Phillips once told an interviewer, "Our music is red with purple flashes." This complete compilation makes clear how much people who doubted the Creation truly missed.
