On their second album, Being as an Ocean temper their fury and expand their sound, offering listeners a more refined take on their brand of post-hardcore with How We Both Wondrously Perish. The album is the first to feature new guitarist and clean vocalist Michael McGough, whose soaring vocals help to add a new sense of dynamics to the band's drifting sound. The star of the show, however, is still singer Joel Quartuccio, whose vocals often alternate between hoarse screams and stern spoken word rants, evoking the passion of a preacher on the pulpit as he gets his message across with just the right blend of passion and pain. The interplay between the two singers' styles is mirrored in the music, which effortlessly oscillates between rapturous ambience and bittersweet drive, giving the band a sound that few of its post-hardcore brethren even come close to touching. ~ Gregory Heaney
