Dexter Gordon Quartet: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Tete Montoliu (piano); Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (bass); Rune Carlsson (drums).
Recorded live at Montmartre Jazzhus, Copenhagen, Denmark on July 9, 1964.
Includes liner notes by Thorbjorn Sjogren.
This is part of SteepleChase's "Dexter in Radioland" series.
The Gordon Quartet recorded at the famed Copenhagen jazz club The Montmartre in 1964. Gordon lives up to the claim, made by many critics and fans, that his best period as a player was the early-to-mid-'60s (when he recorded many classic albums for the Blue Note label). His band features two of the finest jazz players in Europe at the time: the Spanish Tete Montoliu on piano, and the Danish Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, both of whom, especially N-HOP, would play with Gordon many times in the years to come. The recording quality is excellent, and the program is the usual mix of Gordon originals and standards, with equal emphasis on ballads and up-tempo movers. This is a disc of swinging, thoughtful, easygoing jazz.
