The folk revival in the United States had its beginnings in the 1930s, slowly built through the 1940s, then caught on at colleges and hip urban centers in the 1950s before breaking through to its commercial peak in the early '60s. This three-disc, 75-track set does a great job of surveying all that, with tracks from early folk acts like the Weavers, Burl Ives, Josh White, Woody Guthrie, and Cisco Houston, key tracks by midterm artists like Jean Ritchie and others, the big hits by artists like the Kingston Trio who finally brought folk to the AM radio hit lists, and the songwriters like Bob Dylan, Hoyt Axton, and others who fueled the urban folk boom with their impressive songs.
