Issued in the U.K. by Motown on the heels of Johnson's late-'60s hit "I'll Pick a Rose for My Rose," a number one record in England. The record never did much in the States, nor did any of Johnson's releases on Motown's Gordy label. The company never issued this album in the States, and, for the most part, treated Johnson like an unwanted stepchild. Johnson's success came prior to his joining Motown; though he recorded in the company's studios, Berry Gordy, Jr. leased his singles to United Artists Records. It's apparent why U.K. soul freaks fell for these, since most have that four-on-the-four beat (Motown-style) that they loved dancing to in clubs. "I'll Pick a Rose for My Rose," "I Miss You Baby," "So Glad You Chose Me," and remakes of "Sleep" and "Bad Girl" are solid. Another favorite is "Why Do You Want to Let Me Go," which did well in the U.K., also; Johnson really cranks it up on the chorus, and what a great chorus it is. He also does the Miracles' overlooked "Everybody Got to Pay Some Dues," singing it as if it was meant for him -- maybe it was. All are genuine Motown originals waxed in the Snake Pit at 2648 West Grand Blvd. A great pickup if you can find a copy. ~ Andrew Hamilton
