Eat Static's sophomore effort dazzles just as much as its illustrious predecessor, chock-a-block with electrifying sequencers, beats of reinforced galvanized steel, and the largest assemblage of bleeps, blips, bloops, and blurps committed to plastic. The Static manages to rip techno a new orifice and erect it a new edifice simultaneously. The group's love affair with post-"X-Files" imagery and cinematic speculation begets the most futuristic techno to arise yet in this era of Atkins, Mills, Underground Resistance, et al. But the Static is British, and that bit of Anglo wit surfaces repeatedly throughout these Technicolor grooves.
The title track alone will take you there--starstream synths rip out atop a continuum of hyperspeed bubbles and tremolos of CGI effects; you can practically see the saucers landing. In fact, on "Uforic Undulance," the scout ships land indeed, their touchdown thrusters erupting in a storm of bass as the atmosphere curdles, electronics tense and reach critical mass, and the aliens soon emerge--marching to a tick-tock beat. This is techno as it might really have been intended--head music for "headz" young and old. Lock your doors and turn up the volume.
