Well-known as a mix-show DJ in the south, Nabs first entered the national consciousness through his amazing pirate radio-style B-side re-mixes for southern hip-hop artists like Arrested Development and Kris Kross on their 12" releases ("Tennessee" and "Alright", respectively). Although giving lip service to his hometown of Durham, North Carolina, Nabs moved to Atlanta to become the resident DJ at Club Kaya's "Old School Sundays." With IN THE LAB Nabs re-enters the record biz with a mix-tape style compilation a la Funkmaster Flex.
IN THE LAB is less of a showcase for hot artists and exclusive tracks than either Funk Flex's MIXTAPE (VOL. I & II) or other recent releases adopting the mixed-tape format (SOUNDBOMBING, HAZE PRESENTS NYC REALITY CHECK, etc.). It does feature interpolations of various stars' live appearances at Club Kaya (Big Daddy Kane, Wyclef Jean and Kurtis Blow, specifically), as well as studio tracks by Nabs proteges like Jagged Edge & Ludachris. The lion's share of the mix, however, is devoted to Nabs bringing his considerable skills to bear on a selection of guaranteed east coast true-skool party-rockers, with special attention paid to the golden era of Marley Marl's Juice Crew (Biz Markie, MC Shan, et al.).
