Liner Note Author: Gray Newell.
A pair of early releases by seminal Californian psych-rockers the Strawberry Alarm Clock are lovingly repackaged here by British imprint Tune In Records. Their debut LP, Incense and Peppermints, which featured the massive Summer of Love hit of the same name, has been remastered along with the group's 1968 follow-up Wake Up...It's Tomorrow. Augmenting this collection are a pair of alternate mix singles from the latter album -- "Tomorrow" and "Sit with the Guru" -- as well as the original "Incense and Peppermints" B-side "The Birdman of Alkatrash." With their lush, stacked harmonies, trippy organ, and generally upbeat -- if obscure -- songs, SAC evoke a very specific time and place in the constantly changing landscape of the '60s rock scene. While they may not be considered landmark works of their era, these two albums do represent a time of discovery and willful experimentation, and it's hard not to get swept along on their magic carpet ride. ~ Timothy Monger
