Originally recorded in 1957 and released in 1958, JAZZ GIANTS '58 is a canonical jam session album that helped cement West Coast cool jazz as one of the dominant styles of the era. Produced by Norman Granz, this session features Stan Getz on tenor as the nominal leader, backed with Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax (Mulligan also wrote the arrangements), Harry "Sweets" Edison on trumpet, Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Louis Bellson on drums. A cool, understated blend of standards and originals, JAZZ GIANTS '58 is dominated by the four-part "Ballad," on which Mulligan, Edison, Brown, and Getz, in that order, all get to shine on a familiar old standard--including "Lush Life" and "It Never Entered My Mind." This remastered reissue is packaged in a miniature LP sleeve.
