The actual original soundtrack to the surprise movie hit Walt Disney's The Jungle Book was released some time after its summer 1967 release (as well as being reissued as the 2001 CD Jungle Book [Disney 1967]). Though if you tried to seek it out during the movie's initial run, you would usually find this engaging album also known as Songs From Walt Disney's The Jungle Book. It was made up of "jazzed-up" remakes of songs from the movie and as such can stand on its own. Most of the tunes were written by Richard and Robert B. Sherman and Terry Gilkyson. The Oscar-nominated "The Bear Necessities" jams along on perky '60s rock references with a hilarious mid-section that recalls Ray Stevens ("Guitarzan").The LP was perfect fodder for a kiddie party, with such rousing numbers as "I Wanna Be Like You" and "That's What Friends Are For." The lushly orchestrated, heart-tugging reading of "Home" would make the attending adults pause. The closing track, "Civilization," gives a funny, insightful take on its title subject. The album was reissued as a 1990 Disney CD. ~ Ed Hogan
