Randy California's KAPT. KOPTER AND THE (FABULOUS) TWIRLY BIRDS, one of the greatest psychedelic guitar records of all time, is also noted for its broken-down lo-fi aura despite the studio overdubs and groovy sonic effects. Randy California was a guitar master, but much like Buck Dharma with Blue Oyster Cult, his main band, Spirit, never quite made it to the top rank. They had their moments however--THE TWELVE DREAMS OF DR. SARDONICUS being one brilliant example--but nothing quite like the mind-blowing KAPT. KOPTER AND THE (FABULOUS) TWIRLY BIRDS with its transformative Beatles, James Brown, and Paul Simon (!) covers.
