Michelle Shocked emerges from a four-year vacation from the recording industry with the sparse, dusty Americana of KIND HEARTED WOMAN. Like Bruce Springsteen on THE GHOST OF TOM JOAD, Shocked paints harsh, realistic portraits of the underprivileged and disenfranchised in the great American wasteland. Shocked's landscape abounds with hoboes, drunks, killers and widows, and it's pocked by natural disasters. Rather than revel in the details of her characters' misery like some middle American Bukowski, though, she finds the kernels of hope and beauty in these dark scenarios. This blend of realism and optimism is the heart of songs like "Eddie," a tragic tale of a farmboy and his father, and "No Sign Of Rain," whose narrator dreams of skipping town but remains bolted to her front porch.
Despite the presence of Bones Howe, producer of '60s teeny-bopper fare like the Association and the Monkees, KIND HEARTED WOMAN's production is appealingly sparse, emphasizing the deft, evocative lyricism that is Shocked's trademark. With tasteful, empathic accompaniment by a band that includes members of Hothouse Flowers, KIND HEARTED WOMAN is a rewarding trip through a strange, fragile world.
