Although he has gained a little more recognition in the mid-1990s, Detroit-based trumpeter Marcus Belgrave remains an often-overlooked great. For pianist Kirk Lightsey's quintet set, Belgrave is teamed with tenor saxophonist Jean Toussaint, bassist Santi DeBriano, drummer Eddie Gladden and the leader on six little known pieces; including originals by Kenny Dorham ("Windmill"), DeBriano, Toussaint and a pair from Belgrave. The modern hard bop date has plenty of fine solos and is easily recommended to straight-ahead jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow
