Legend ("Red Boot")/Moonshine

BGO's 2014 two-fer pairs the first two albums by Legend, a group best known as the first led by self-proclaimed old rock & roller Mickey Jupp. On their first album, they sound a little more straight-ahead, opting for grooving Chuck Berry rockers that were out of fashion in 1970 but sound a bit better in retrospect. Moonshine hits a little heavier and gets a little spacier, feeling a bit more tied to its 1971 date while still flirting with old-time rock & roll. Neither record is perfect -- the group seems to be searching for a groove instead of settling into it -- but they have a nice interplay, some of the songs click, and the two records have their period charm, existing right between late-'60s jam rock and '70s pub rock. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
