The Johnny Mercer/Gene de Paul musical captures the arch, sometimes cynical tone of Al Capp's comic strip and contains all those hayseed characters. Songs like "Jubilation T. Cornpone" and "The Country's in the Very Best of Hands" are much more satiric than anything one normally associates with the 50s, but they certainly don't sound dated today. The cast includes Edith Adams, Stubby Kaye, Tina Louise, and Julie Newmar. ~ William Ruhlmann
