The king of juju music, performing here with the 20-piece African Beats, unfurls his lush, complex, utterly singular brand of Afropop to stirring effect on this 1987 live set. As on early '80s Ade albums such as SYNCRO SYSTEM and AURA, the music of LIVE! LIVE JUJU! mixes elements of traditional Nigerian music and Western pop in an immediately appealing, danceable hybrid. Talking drums dialogue with synthesizer lines, fluid guitar embellishments lend counter melodies, vocal chants create propulsive rhythms, and the whole is tied together with a modern compositional sensibility that translates easily across cultural boundaries.
Ade's live show highlights the rich Yoruban drum interplay that serves as the music's foundation, and LIVE! features three solo spots in which the African Beats percussionists dazzle with their complexity and power. Elsewhere, Ade's compositions such as the breezy and sinuous "Kira Kira," or the pulsing polyrhythms of "Ase," employ a battery of interacting instruments in a rich, shifting tapestry. The presence of slide and Hawaiian guitars gives a lilting, relaxed vibe to much of Ade's work. An excellent performance from one of Nigeria's most important musical ambassadors.
