Hot on the heels of Eric Copeland's magnetic curio of a debut, HERMAPHRODITE, Black Dice released LOAD BLOWN, a hypnotic masterpiece of polychromatic loops, organic sound spasms, and pedal fetishism. After nearly relentless touring throughout the '00s, which saw the band morph from agro noise assaultists to favorite sons in Brooklyn's neo-psych noise scene, the trio truly mastered their unique alchemy of turning noise into song with LOAD BLOWN.
Lead-off track "Kokomo" instantly places the listener in a jungle of inorganic matter where awkward synth phrases and reverb splashes fight for space; "Roll Up" sounds like "Iko Iko" as performed by a troupe of firecrackers and sparklers; and "Toka Toka" moves into hip-hop territory with hints of an out-of-tune koto skipping over a DJ-scratch-style beat. With their approach newly chastened by a sense of playfulness, the band fittingly released LOAD BLOWN on Animal Collective's imprint Paw-Tracks, and joined the Collective as Brooklyn's best purveyors of loopy, imaginative stoner fun.
