Love Collection

Marvin Gaye was a subtle, graceful singer with an innate and intimate sense of phrasing, and few singers in his era could handle a love song the way he could. This set has a nice mix of Gaye classics like "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)," "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby," "Let's Get It On," his definitive and ominous version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," and the brilliant, late-era "Sexual Healing," although one wonders what a song like "Trouble Man," impressive as it is, is doing on a collection of Marvin Gaye love songs. The bottom line is that Gaye could sing the phone book and it would sound intimate, sexy, and exactly like a love song. ~ Steve Leggett
