Mal Waldron Trio: Mal Waldron, Addison Farmer, Kenny Dennis.
Recorded on September 26, 1958.
This 1958 recording was the final of Mal Waldron's four Mal-titled albums (MAL/1, MAL/2, MAL/3, MAL/4). Fronting a trio with drummer Kenny Dennis and bass player Addison Farmer, this album is more or less divided between standards and originals. Among the originals, "J.M.'s Dream Doll" was dedicated to saxophonist Jackie McLean and his wife Dolly and is heard in all of its gorgeous sleekness. This number had also been on MAL/2, with McLean as part of Waldron's sextet. His closing "Love Span" is achingly romantic in a manner that straddles jazz, pop and pastoral classicism. Burke & Van Heusen's "Like Someone In Love" finds the pianist adhering to the dramatic melodic tensions favored by Billie Holiday, whom Waldron accompanied during the last few years of her life.
