After listening to MASK, it's easy to make the connection between Vangelis and film. If any one of the records in his vast oeuvre could serve as a soundtrack, MASK would be it. Here, one-man orchestra Vangelis provides an electronic symphony in six movements.
The rippling synth-and-strings adagio of "Movement One" suggests a vagabond's journey through majestic and mythic lands. "Movement Four" offers Asian vibraphones, bells, spoken word, operatic arias, and stentorian bass thrusts. Were it not for his use of electronics, many would regale Vangelis as one of the 20th century's finest and most "progressive" composers. But Vangelis works in an idiom roundly dismissed by classical purists, so such recognition remains beyond his reach. Regardless, the piquant post-modern figures of MASK remain a powerful alternative to staid classicism
