Personnel: Dexter Gordon (vocals, tenor and soprano saxophone), Palle Mikkelborg (trumpet, arranger, conductor), Allan Botschinsky, Benny Rosenfeld, Idrees Sulieman (trumpet, flugelhorn), Vincent Nilsson, Richard Boone (trombone), Axel Windfeld (bass trombone), Preben Garnov (french horn), Bent Larson (flute), Erwin Jocobsen (oboe, english horn), Luba Boschenko (harp), Per Walther, Mogens Holm Larsen, Age Knudsen (violin), Bjarne Boie Rasmussen (viola), Erling Christensen (cello), Thomas Clausen (piano), Kenneth Knudsen (synthesizer), Ole Molin (guitar), Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (bass), Ed Thigpen, Alex Riel (drums) Klaus Nordsoe (congas, percussion).
Recorded in Copenhagen on February 21-23, and March 27, 1975. Originally released on Steeplechase (1030).
Dexter Gordon's SteepleChase recordings of the early- to mid-'70s are among the most rewarding of his career. This particular session (which finds Gordon backed by a string orchestra arranged by Palle Mikkelborg) is one of the lesser items from this fertile period. Dexter is in memorable form on "Naima" and "More than You Know" but the backup orchestra has little interplay with Gordon and the lush charts offer few surprises. This set does not quite live up to its potential although Dexter Gordon fans will still find moments to enjoy. ~ Scott Yanow
