During the 1920s, Paul Whiteman, despite being billed "The King of Jazz," performed a wide variety of music. Close to Whiteman's heart were major semi-classical works that had the flavor of jazz but were really outside of the music altogether. Some of the key pieces from 1927-1928 are gathered together on this CD. Of greatest interest is the original concert version of "When Day Is Done" (featuring trumpeter Henry Busse), the second version of "Rhapsody in Blue" (featuring George Gershwin on piano), and the three-part Gershwin work "Concerto in F." Also included are Victor Herbert's four-part "Suite of Sereandes," "Soliloquy," "Midnight Reflections," Ferde Grofe's arrangement of "Sea Burial," and "Caprice Futuristic." This is an intriguing historic release even though much of the music sounds a bit dated. ~ Scott Yanow
