When an artist the caliber of Freddie Hubbard makes a comeback, all must sit up and take notice. NEW COLORS finds the trumpeter, plagued in his later years by lengthy bouts of inactivity, revisiting his earlier material with a newfound energy. He is joined here by both old friends and some newer talents. Notable supporters are drummers Joe Chambers and Idris Muhammad, saxophonists Ted Nash, Craig Handy, Kenny Garrett, and Javon Jackson, and trombonist Steve Davis. The result is a session that recalls Hubbard's classic Blue Note days, which will inspire countless trumpeters for generations.
Hubbard is featured throughout on flugelhorn. Though he doesn't reach the stratospheric heights of his past, his full-flavored tones reflect the rich maturity of his experience. The large ensemble provides just the right backdrop with excellent arrangements by Hubbard and trumpeter David Weiss. Two notable cuts are "Blues For Miles," which features Hubbard sparring with alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and the Latin piece "Dizzy's Connotations," an exceptional arrangement that features Javon Jackson on tenor. Also of interest is Hubbard's well-known "Red Clay," a funky highlight with many fine spotlights. Hopefully, NEW COLORS will prove to be more than a brief splash on Hubbard's canvas.
