The most widely known composer of soundtracks to the endless barrage of "spaghetti western" movies in the '60s is Italian composer/arranger Ennio Morricone. From "A Fistful of Dollars" to "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly," his signature ghostly guitars and haunting, tension-filled arrangements made the Jew's harp, harmonica, and piccolo (among others) synonymous with the old West. Morricone has since then scored many films of differing genres by well known directors such as Roman Polanski, Brian DePalma, and Barry Levinson. After more than 500 soundtracks, GLI OCCHI FREDDI DELLA PAURA (Cold Eyes of Fear) is the first credited collaboration (where Morricone both writes and performs) with Italian avant-garde experimental outfit Gruppo Di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza.
GLI OCCHI... creates an atmosphere of cinematic experimental music that can stand alone, without the aid of filmic images. Highly experimental, at times cacophonous yet frighteningly tension-filled, at others pleasantly jazzy, the arrangements inject everything from fuzz guitar, drums, upright bass, and keyboards to unidentifiable pings, pangs, scrapes and bursts.
