The Grifters: Diamond Dave Shouse, Slim Taylor, Tripp Lampshade, Stank Gallimore.
Additional personnel: Greg Easterly (violin, bass); Jimmy Enck, Fields Trimble (saxophone); Sherman (bicycle horn); Jack Adcock (gourd); Robert Gordon, Jim Cole, Roy Berry.
Producers: The Grifters, Shangri-la Records.
Engineers include: Roy Berry, Davis McCain, Doug Easley.
Recorded in Memphis, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Tripp.
ONE SOCK MISSING was the second full-length release by the Memphis-based Grifters. A subtle, low-fi production helps strengthen this clever set of home-recorded songs. Though the Grifters show a penchant for saturating tapes and overloading meters, the group possess enough pop smarts to know when to temper their studio shenanigans.
The hook-filled songs on ONE SOCK MISSING show similarities to the work of Guided By Voices and Pavement. "Bummer" and "She Blows Stacks of Static" are classics. The band's quirkiness is heard here in its first flower--the Grifters' breakthrough would come with 1996's AIN'T MY LOOKOUT, the band's first effort to be recorded in a professional studio.
