Being the big fish in a small pond can feel great, but it's limiting. It takes guts to break free from the safe confines of home in an effort to grow. Bands move to Los Angeles every day to seek fame and fortune, but few succeed. For Carbondale, Illinois' Revis the risk paid off in the form of their debut album PLACES FOR BREATHING.
The songs deliver the driving guitars and soaring melodic choruses that are the foundation of early-'00s heavy rock (Creed, Nickelback), but Revis's own personality still shows. "Caught In The Rain" is deceptively simple, drawing you in and leaving you wanting more. The band's traditional guitar format is augmented by textural electronics ("Seven"), and shades of Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello surface in "Spin." While much of PLACES is mid-tempo it's the fiery "City Beneath" that lets the band show its mettle.
