The most straightforward overview of Chelsea's early career (anthologies like FOOLS AND SOLDIERS use a lot of alternate mixes and demos), THE PUNK SINGLES COLLECTION covers the band's first five years, up to the first of its occasional hiatuses. Its albums from this era--CHELSEA, ALTERNATIVE HITS, and EVACUATE--are pretty hit-or-miss affairs; like most punk bands, singer Gene October and crew hit almost all of their high points on seven-inch singles.
Stridently political classics like the anti-union "Right to Work," "Urban Kids," "War Across the Nation," and "I'm on Fire" are minor punk gems. The group's Slade-like hard rock sound is more immediately enticing to punk newcomers than the harsher sounds of many of the group's contemporaries.
