Paul Newman made his directorial debut with this Best Picture nominee, a portrait of a lonely, unmarried 35-year-old schoolteacher (Newman's real-life wife, Joanne Woodward) who feels as though she's led a wasted life, but has second thoughts when she learns to express her own needs and emotions. In flashback scenes, Newman and Woodward's daughter Nell Potts portrays her mother as a child.
