1967's REVOLUTION was Paul Revere and the Raiders' last hit album. Rapidly changing tastes in pop music rendered them yesterday's news rather quickly, which is a shame since this album's follow-up, SOMETHING'S HAPPENING, is one of their better releases. REVOLUTION is no slouch itself, taking the widened musical horizons of the preceding SPIRIT OF '67--folk-rock and sunshine pop interspersed with the R&B-laced frat-rock stompers which made their early name--and homogenizing them.
The result is an album which sounds more consistent than SPIRIT OF '67, but retains that album's charm. From the tough-guy opening "Him or Me--What's it Gonna Be?" to the more tender sentiments of "Upon Your Leaving," singer Mark Lindsay, keyboardist Revere and cohorts--gotta love a band with a member named "Fang"--play smart and substantial pop-rock which is much better than their Revolutionary War schtick might suggest.
