Four-volume compilation Rootsman Vibration at King Jammy's collects four previously released albums produced and engineered by roots reggae mastermind Prince Jammy (aka King Jammy) at a burning peak of his productivity and innovation. All four of these albums originally saw release in 1980 and represent some of the best work from some of the strongest performers of the era. Johnny Osbourne's Folly Ranking features tight rhythms from Sly & Robbie which carry Osbourne's breezy tunes. Hugh Mundell and Lacksley Castell offer the more politically charged Jah Fire; Barry Brown's Showcase is a more dubby, streamlined affair and Noel Phillips (later known as Echo Minott) offers Youth Man Vibrations, an intricate web of dense rhythms and intermittent production effects lacing his songs of social commentary with a psychedelic, slightly electronic funk. ~ Fred Thomas
