In Venice, Italy, in 1866, toward the end of Austrian occupation, countess Livia Serpieri begins an affair with an Austrian lieutenant. Although he is responsible for exiling her activist cousin, Livia falls desperately in love with the officer. He begins using her for her money, driving her to betray her family and her country in order to keep his affection.
