As per usual, Steve Bernstein's Sex Mob mix up everything from Dixieland to Albert Ayler-styled free blowing, and Medeski fits right in with this aesthetic. The repertoire includes classic jazz (Ellington and Basie), film music (John Barry's James Bond themes), Prince covers ("Sign O' the Times" and "Darling Nikki"), and originals. The musicians push each other to frenetic heights, yet are always grounded in melody and groove, making this live set a pleasure for any high-minded, fun-loving contemporary jazz fan.
