Are they the Spice Girls of the classical world or the Tokyo String Quartet of girl-pop? Perhaps a little bit of both. There's no denying that this photogenic female string quartet is oriented for maximum marketability. From their scantily clad, Playboyesque booklet photos to their crafty mixture of classical themes and dance pop, Bond is clearly aiming for a mass audience, perhaps neither that of Britney Spears nor the Kronos Quartet, but some demographic that exists in the vast space between them. Their repertoire is certainly all over the map. SHINE moves rather seamlessly through the hard-rock Middle Easternisms of the Led Zeppelin classic "Kashmir" to Argentinean accordionist Astor Piazzola's famed "Libertango" without missing a beat. Along the way, the Bond girls mix their own compositions with classical themes from the vaults of Borodin, Albinoni, and others, all dolled up for maximum accessibility with drum loops and darting synthesizers.
