Silver City

John Sayles' political drama Silver City debuts on DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and does a fine job of presenting Haskell Wexler's typically brilliant cinematography. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Sayles and his longtime producer Maggie Renzi. They offer many stories about the difficulty they had shooting the film very quickly on a small budget. Their comments were recorded on Election Day in 2004, and their not being aware of the results of the election adds a certain poignancy to their politically and socially topical comments. A making-of documentary and trailers round out the extras on this package. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. This film failed to get much attention at the box office, but fans of Sayles' writerly work should appreciate this disc.
