This quick blast of greasy, grimy punk from Memphis's Oblivians is one of the true classics of the mid-1990s garage rock boom. Coming off like a Molotov cocktail aimed directly at Sun Studios, SOUL FOOD is bursting with punk fury and boozy desperation. Amidst all the crude and rude slop, however, are unexpected covers of German synth poppers Trio ( "Ja Ja Ja" and "Sunday You Need Love"), the Dave Clark Five ("Anyway You Want It"), and Lightning Hopkins (a seriously revved-up run-through of "Vietnam War Blues") that reveal smarts lurking beneath the belligerence. Raw, sloppy, and seriously ticked off, SOUL FOOD is indeed nourishment for a twisted heart.
