The debut full-length from Canadian mathcore kids Starring Janet Leigh splits the difference between relentlessly intense death metal and adventurous modern jazz arrangements. Vocals that alternately scream and growl and scouring riffs that whiz by like they were played by a tornado characterize the punishing "Mistress" and the meat-grinding puzzle-thrash of "Ex You." SPECTRUM often hews close to the calculus mayhem of early Dillinger Escape Plan, but the band has found an original take on the nexus between metal heaviness and progressive instrumental daring without sacrificing raw brutality.
