When Darren Hayes made the leap to a solo career, the fresh-faced Aussie stuck to his strengths in creating the same kind of adult contemporary sounds that he made as a member of Savage Garden. Hayes retained the services of producer Walter Afanasieff for his debut SPIN, and the template was trimmed with lush orchestration, slick beats, and delicate hooks that stay well within the parameters of radio-friendly pop. Delivering the goods with a tenor that brings to mind classic '80s Michael Jackson, Hayes bounces from synth-driven New Wave ("Crush [1980 Me]"), new jack lite ("Heart Attack"), and mid-tempo dance cuts soaked in strings ("Creepin' Up On You").
Not surprisingly, the area where the fair-haired heartthrob excels on this outing is in the realm of romantic crooner. Giving him the chance to trot out this sentimental side are irresistible ballads like the yearning "I Miss You," Latin-tinged "Insatiable," and the catchy-as-all-get-out "Good Enough." Savage Garden fans won't be disappointed with Darren Hayes's solo outing, and all other pop fans are directed to take this record out for a SPIN.
