Former slave St. Patrick (389 A.D.-461 A.D.), the patron saint of Ireland and namesake for America's foremost day for consuming alcohol in bars, was born in Roman-occupied Britain and kidnapped by pirates at age 14. Sold to slave-traders in Ireland, he spent six formative years there as a slave surrounded by the Celtic Druid culture. Eventually returning to Ireland as a Christian missionary, he converted the Irish royals as well as their subjects over the next 40 years, and the resultant Irish version of Christianity emerged as a mixture of both Catholicism and the Celtic perspective of the joyous celebration of life and enthusiastic embrace of nature. Nicholas McCarthy plays Patrick in recreations and reads the saint's moving surviving confession in voice-over. Shot on location in Ireland, the documentary also features interviews with writer Michael Slavin (THE BOOK OF TARA) and historian-priest Father Frank Fahey.
