The late alto saxophonist Robin Kenyatta stood astride several eras in jazz. In the 1960's he played with free-jazz icons Bill Dixon and Roswell Rudd and recorded with bebop legend Sonny Stitt. At the same time, he was among the first artists to record for ECM Records, and also made several popular records in a fusion mode during the `70s. STOMPIN' AT THE SAVOY is from the latter period, when Kenyatta desired to connect with a more diverse audience. With the aid of bass ace Ron Carter, master drummer Bernard Purdie, and protean pianist Dr. John, Kenyatta lays down some relaxed, funky, and easygoing jazz.
