Swimmer: Anday McCarron (vocals, guitar); Jeff Thall (guitar); James Elliott (bass); Chad Royce (drums, percussion).
Personnel: Anday McCarron (vocals, guitar); Jeff Thall (guitar); Chad Royce (snare drum).
Audio Mixer: Michael Tuller.
Recording information: Eldorado Recording Studio; Mix Room; Swimmers Rehearsal Room.
Signed to Madonna's Maverick label, Swimmer, a pop/rock band hailing from New York, have put together an interesting and mature-sounding debut in SURREAL. Singer Andy McCarron's has an appealing voice with a range that can go from subdued to piercing levels. One of the most impressive things about Swimmer is the maturity of their songwriting, as seen in the dynamic peaks and valleys of tracks like "Dirty Word, "Dumb," and the title cut.
Produced by Dave Jerden (Jane's Addiction) and McCarron, SURREAL has an energy and polish not found in most debut albums. Some of the other tracks worthy of attention are "Playing Jesus," "Because Today," and the addictive, acoustic "Spaced Out Hat." FYI: the group gets its name from a mildly psychedelic Burt Lancaster film that was based on a John Cheever story.
