THE COMPLETE WAILERS, 1967-1972 PART I is a well-documented collection of the Wailers' pre-major-label material that casts light on some rare odds and ends. A charming take on the Archies' classic "Sugar Sugar" opens the disc, with infectious vocal interplay between Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Rita Marley. Other rarities include an alternate take on "Can't You See" and a b-side version of "The Letter." Especially noteworthy is "Hold on to This Feeling," a track that features some haunting, near-psychedelic, echoey doo-wop background vocal work over which Rita's lead vocals take center stage. For aficionados looking to add an indispensable piece of early Wailers work to their collection, or for neophytes seeking insight into the sounds that helped lay the groundwork for Bob Marley's legend, this is the place to turn.
