2 LPs on 1 CD: THIRD ALBUM (1970)/MAYBE TOMORROW (1971).
Producers: Hal Davis, The Corporation, George Gordy & Lawrence Brown.
Reissue producer: Harry Weinger.
THIRD ALBUM originally released on Motown (718). MAYBE TOMORROW originally released on Motown (735). Includes liner notes by Brian Chin.
Digitally remastered by Jeff Willens (Universal Mastering Studios-East).
This two-for-one collection brings together the Jackson 5's third and fourth releases--THIRD ALBUM and MAYBE TOMORROW. Issued the same year as their second album, which spawned the #1 pop and R&B hits "ABC" and "The Love You Save," THIRD ALBUM displayed the Jacksons as bona fide pop sensations. The brothers continued their streak of hits with the record's lead single "I'll Be There." This poignant ballad, which showcases young Michael's earnest vocal style, offset the group's profile as sunny, bubblegum soul.
The other highlights of THIRD ALBUM include "Ready or Not (Here I Come)" (later reprised by the Fugees), and the chugging "Mama's Pearl." The set segues into MAYBE TOMORROW's plaintive title cut, and also presents the impassioned "Never Can Say Goodbye." Both songs prove the Jackson 5 as adept at romantic balladry as they are at high-octane pop ("I Want You Back"). Though there are crossover covers here ("Bridge Over Troubled Water," "16 Candles"), the Corporation (Motown's songwriting team for the group) culls excellent material from other soul artists, and contributes some fine originals as well. Two bonus cuts, remastered sound, and a lavishly illustrated booklet make this an outstanding package.
